the process of digestion starts from mouth. when we chew our food, certain nutrients seeps down to the blood vessels and go along with blood to the cells. which the food that can not penetrate to the blood is mixed with saliva which is slightly alkaline in nature that starts the breakdown of sugars. as we gulp the food down now mixed with saliva it goes down a track we call as food pipe or esophagus. it has certain mucus producing bodies. that forms a layer of mucus over the inner side of esophagus for easy travelling of the food. esophagus churns the food along the way to the stomach. it then in stomach enter to pyloric region mixes with HCl and exits to duodenum where it mixes with digestive enzymes and salts from gallbladder and pancreas. which reduces the sugars to monosaccharide (glucose and fructose basically), proteins to amino acids and fats to fatty acids and lipids which are absorbed by the villi and micro villi on the inner surface of intestine. the large intestine absorbs the water content and the waste is excreted out. the absorbed nutrients are used in generating ATP by cells using oxygen gained from respiration for the generation of ATP ( energy) which used to carry out metabolic functioning of the body.
