3x + 2y = 64 - (a) \\ 2y + x = 40 \\ x + 2y = 40 - (b) \\ now \: subtract \: equation \: (b) \: from \: (a) \\ (3x + 2y) - (x + 2y) = 64 - 40 \\ 3x + 2y - x - 2y = 24 \\ 2x = 24 \\ x = 24 \div 2 \\ x = 12 \\ and \: now \: put \: value \: of \: x \: in \: equation \: (b) \\ 12 + 2y = 40 \\ 2y = 40 - 12 \\ y = 28 \div 2 \\ y = 14
