Every species or organisms has inbuilt tendency for genetic variation which plays an important role in the origin of new species and forms the the basis for evolution. Organisms appear to be same because of similarity in their inherited body designs. The more characteristics two species have in common, the more closely they are related. And they are likely to have a a common ancestor more recently. Classification of organisms necessarily involves, organizing them in different groups, based on the similarities and differences of characteristics. Classifying organisms helps us in recognizing the basic arrangement of a hierarchical structure among diverse species. It tells us about the resemblances and relationships between various organisms thus facilitating studies or research of wide variety associated with organisms effortlessly. In fact, classification of species is a reflection of their evolutionary relationship. Thus, we can say, the areas of study evolution and classification interlinked
Biodiversity refers to the diversity of living things on earth. Earth is the home to around 8 million known species. Scientist and taxonomist brought many new ideas for the classification of these species. Some are similar in their body design but differ in other characteristics. Where do these millions of species come from? Time had a role to play. Over thousands and millions of years, different species evolved from one or more ancestors. This is called the evolution. Evolutions took place and resulted in biodiversity. Let’s learn more about classification and evolution.
Classification and Evolution
In this world, there are numerous species known and unknown to us. For the ease of study and identification of organisms, they have been classified into different groups based on different criteria. We know body design is one of the criteria for biological classification. Every classification started with a basic design. Once there was only one body design, with the time design changes. Later, organisms with new body design may be more advanced ones, came into existence. Thus we can say, there is a thin line that connects classification and evolution of species.
Evolution says that the life-forms exist today are better versions of early life-forms. In 1859, ‘The Origin of Species’ a book by Charles Darwin mentioned the term evolution for the first time. According to Darwin theory, the organisms which existed years ago had undergone certain changes for better survival and the new life forms have arisen from them.
Evolutions have laid an elementary stone or pathway for classification. Even though evolution took place when we classify organisms some sort of species still have their ancestry body designs. They didn’t change completely. While another set of organisms developed a new advanced body design different from their ancestor. The former ones are called ‘primitive or lower’ organisms and the latter group is called ‘advanced or higher’ organisms. But these terms do not justify the evolutionary differences, we can call primitive ones, ‘older organisms’ and advanced ones are ‘young organisms’. Older organisms have simple body designs while young organisms have complex body designs. Thus, evolution has resulted from simple older organism to complex young organisms.
