  1. Before the Vijayanagar Kings rose in this area, the city was ruled by Kampili and his chiefs. Kampili is now a quaint town that is situated 19 km on the east of Hampi. It was Colin Mackenzie who discovered the ruins of Hampi in 1800.
  2. Military chiefs usually controlled forts and had armed supporters.

These chiefs often moved from one area to another and in many cases were accompanied by peasants looking for fertile land on which to settle.These chiefs were known as nayakas and they usually spoke Telugu or Kannada

I. Strain began to show after the death of Krishnadeva's Rayas death in 1529.

II. Successors were weak.

III. Successors were troubled by the rebellious nayakas or military chiefs.

IV. Control of the centre was shifted to another ruling lineage that of Aravidu.
