it means that before the arrival of british,our India is unaware of development and all believed in superstitions and followed many cruel traditions like sari,caste system etc....since,after the arrival of the British,people gradually understood the situation and many tried to stop them.Hence, according to the British historians,the modern period of India history began with the establishment of British rule....As the British historians started writing our Indian history,they wrote according to their comfort and their favour,so they always focussed on their rule of British and ignored about the Indian people and their self development....hope u will understand better
