The writer(Jerome) in the room smoking with his friends, Harris and George. They were talking about the illness they had (not really) and were certain they were in danger and were going to die.
The author remembers the time he had gone to a British museum reading information about diseases. He had convinced himself that he had gotten every disease on the list except for one, housemaid knees.
The friends decide that taking a vacation together would get themselves rest and would make themselves feel better. The author want to stay at a a rural, old-world spot, but Harris doesn't want to stay at 'remote' places and wishes to go on a sea cruise.
The author disagrees as he is sea sick as argues one week is not enough time to overcome seasickness and actually enjoy the trip.
George suggests taking a boat trip down the Thames, an idea that everyone approves. Though the author felt that that Montmorency, his dog, will get bored in the boat, but they decide to bring him along anyway.
