Several gases in the air emitted by factories such as Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide and Carbon Dioxide react with the water in the air to form acids, namely Nitric Acid, Sulphurous Acid and Carbonic Acid.

These acids fall on the earth along with rain and cause great harm to buildings, marine life, and act as an irritant for people’s skin.

The term 'acid rain' is used to describe all precipitations--rain,snow,fog,dew--that are more acidic than normal water.Normal rain is only slightly acidic, having pH about 5.6;this is because carbon dioxide reacts with it to form weak carbonic acid.
pH of Acid rain usually ranges between 5.6 and 3.5 at time it can be as low as 2.
