can anyone explain me last 2 paragraphs of the story 'the old man at the bridge'

At the point of the time the old man is resigned to his fate but somewhere he feels a pang of disappointment as the only thing in the world he lived for was his animals and due to the war he will not be able to do that also.

As the day was overcast with clouds and there were possibilities of rain, the planes were not in action so the bombing wouldn't occur. That and the fact that his cats could look after themselves was the only luck he would ever have.
