Answer:
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (or, NREGA No 42, later renamed as the “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act”, MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work'.
The act was first proposed in 1991 by P.V. Narasimha Rao. It was finally accepted in the parliament and commenced implementation in 625 districts of India.
Why is Mgnrega important?
The primary goal was social protection for the most vulnerable people living in rural India through providing employment opportunities. MGNREGA explicitly aimed to create durable assets including drought-proofing and flood management, and aid in the empowerment of the marginalised.
The MGNREGA was enacted in 2005 to guarantee 100 days of employment per year to rural households. The Standing Committee on Rural Development (Chair: Sumitra Mahajan) submitted its report on the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) on August 14, 2013.
