What fascinates me the most is the fact that amongst all the languages in the world, it is English which has gained so much popularity among the people especially when you're living in a country like India wherein if you know how to converse in English, you are simply above everyone. Just as I read on Quora which was a lovely set of words as of how to impress an Indian which said 'If you're an Indian, speak in English. If you aren't an Indian, speak in Hindi. Congratulations. You've successfully impressed an Indian.' It doesn't really matter whether you know anything or not, till you're able to dazzle your neighbour with an eloquent tongue. You make a mistake while conversing in Hindi, nobody cares. You make a mistake in English, you'll be taunted for the rest of your life. That was taking the Indians into consideration. On a global level, here's my argument. English has the weirdest grammar rules. Trust me. I mean it when I say that. This was again something I ran into while surfing through Quora. When you say 'Big red ball', you're correct but if you say 'Red big ball', you're incorrect. Seriously? Coming to the pronunciations. We all are certainly aware of what a mess it is when you're trying to combat pronunciations of different words. To add an insult to the injury, the language has been divided into American and British English. Wow. Just amazing. Worth an applause, is it not? Here again! I'm expected to use an 'an' before a word starting with a vowel. But, it's ruled out when taking the words like 'uniform' into consideration. Coming back to pronunciations. The simplest word in the English dictionary is 'the'. Well, the pronunciation of 'the' also changes when you're using it before a word starting with a vowel. Here, it has to be pronounced as 'thee'. For the rest, 'the' seems okay. Crazy, isn't it?

Edit:

I might be a naive to comment on any well established language like this but this is just a view that I'm sharing. I am not here to invite the ridicule of my fellow Quorans. Thank you.

LANGUAGES!!! and their EVOLUTION...

Probably because I am an Indian and we see more change and variety in language as compared to other parts of the world...but it is really fascinating...

What fascinates me is the similarities that two different languages have when they are geographically closer...at the same time some do not have them at all...

In most cases you find 90% similarity and in others you find no similarity at all...

I am constantly fascinated how these all might have developed over a period of time and how they are constantly changing with time...
