Explanation:

Phosphine is a colorless, flammable, very toxic gas compound with the chemical formula PH₃, classed as a pnictogen hydride. Pure phosphine is odorless, but technical grade samples have a highly unpleasant odor like rotting fish, due to the presence of substituted phosphine and diphosphane.

Answer:Phosphine (IUPAC name: phosphane) is a colorless, flammable, very toxic gas compound with the chemical formula PH3, classed as a pnictogen hydride. Pure phosphine is odorless, but technical grade samples have a highly unpleasant odor like rotting fish, due to the presence of substituted phosphine and diphosphane (P2H4). With traces of P2H4 present, PH3 is spontaneously flammable in air (pyrophoric), burning with a luminous flame. Phosphine is also the general name given to the class of organophosphorus compounds of substituted phosphanes—a class of phosphanes in which the hydrogen atoms have been replaced with organic derivative, having a general formula PR3. Organophosphines are important in catalysts where they complex (adhere) to various metal ions; complexes derived from a chiral phosphine can catalyze reactions to give chiral, enantioenriched products.

Phosphine is used in the semiconductor industry to introduce phosphorus into silicon crystals . It is also used as a fumigant, a polymerization initiator and as an intermediate for the preparation of several flame retardants. Phosphine has an odor of garlic or decaying fish but is odorless when pure.

Preparation of Phosphine:

Calcium phosphide is mixed with water or dilutes HCl. This results in the formation of phosphine. In the laboratory white phosphorous is heated with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution in an inert atmosphere of CO2 to form phosphine.

Phosphine is a Lewis base because there is a non-bonding pair of electrons on the P that can be donated.

It is  found in Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere, where it forms in the planet's hot interior and reacts with other compounds in the upper atmosphere. The abiotic synthesis of phosphine takes enormous amounts of energy, such as in the planet-sized convective storms of gas giants.

Phosphine is produced when metallic phosphides (e.g., aluminum, calcium, or zinc phosphides) react with water or acid. Both aluminum and zinc phosphides are used as rodenticides. Phosphine may be produced during the generation of acetylene gas.

PH3 has a lower boiling point than ammonia due to its inability to assorted via intermolecular hydrogn bonding. This is because phosphorus is bigger have bigger size as compare to nitrogen thus have weak bonding with hydrogen.
