The story hunger portrays the life of Rizwan who was a young educated man. He took the job in the Kihaan newspaper through an acquaintance but was asked to submit interviews with any five people to be considered for the job.
The story opens with a scene of a marketplace where Rizwan was glancing for a worker whom he could interview. There were people busy buying things, eating and drinking. Suddenly, he saw a man carrying a load on his head and Rizwan thought that he was the right man to be interviewed. Placing a hand on his shoulder, he straightforwardly asked his name and his profession. After knowing that his name was Kasim and he sold old clothes for which he barely earned about five hundred rupees a month, Rizwan started to ask him many other questions and after sometime the man replied that he did not want to waste his time over a futile interview and departed for his work.
Rizwan stood there feebly as the situation in his own house was depressing too. He lost his father two years ago. His mother was ill and his two brothers had to drop out of school due to financial problems. His pocket was empty and he was already exhausted. There was only one hour left to submit the interview. So he went to the newspaper office and submitted his interview, writing his name and address instead of Kasim's name. He felt contended and comforted after submitting his first interview but a bit apprehensive about finding his own name and addresses of the people to be interviewed the next day. Still, he was convinced that he would surely find out a way and things will change for the better.
