INTRODUCTION :Diversity is the hallmark of nature.Variation among the organisms leads to evolution and growth of biodiversity.

Definition of Biodiversity:The variety and variability seen in plants and animals is called biodiversity.

Based on variations ,food intake, structure etc organisms have been classified that is given by WITTAKER. (a widely accepted classification)

It is also called as 5 kingdoms classification.
1)Monera
2)Protista
3)Plantae
4)Fungi and
5)Animalia

The characteristics of each kingdom are as follows

1)Monera:One celled organisms
-Cells have no membrane bound nucleus
-Reproduce by splitting in two
-Nutrients absorb from outside bodies
-They have locomotory organs like flagella, cilia, etc
Examples-bacteria(Archaebacteria,eubacteria and cynobacteria)

2)Protista-Many of them are unicellular and some are multicellular
-They have membrane around nucleaus
-They live solitary or single or in colonies
-some cell organelles are present inside the cell
-Example:Paramecium,amoeba,algaeetc

3)Fungi-Many are multicellular and some are unicellular
-Reproduce by spores
-Get nutrients and energy by absorbing
-Examples:Yeast , mushroom,breadmould etc

4)Plantae-Plants are diverse in nature.
-Based on food intake they have divided into two - Autotrophs and Heterotrophs

Autotrophs:They prepare their own food through a process called photosynthesis.EX:All green plants

Heterotrophs:They absorb nutrients and energy from other organisms.Ex:parasitic plants, saprophytic, etc

5)Animals:They are organisms which are eukaryotic, multicellular and heterotrophic. They do not have cell walls and most of them are mobile. They have classified based on body design into different organisms. They are
-Porifera Ex:Sycon,Spongilla etc
-Cindarians/Coelenterata Ex:Hydra,jellyfish etc
-Platyhelminthes Ex:Planarians,tape worm etc
-Nematoda/nematyhelminthes Ex:Round worms etc
-Annelida Ex: Earthworms
-Arthropodas Ex: cockroaches,spiders etc
-Mollusca Ex:Snails, mussels etc
-Echinodermata Ex:Starfish
-ProtochordataEx:Balanoglossus,Amphioxus etc
-Vertebrata Ex:Pisces,amphibians,reptiles,birds and mammals.
