As Henri Poincare stated that Mathematicians do not study objects, but relations between objects, teachers have to make their students as young mathematicians, understand this relation. This chapter addresses about comparing quantity and relations especially in introducing or teaching algebra to young students. In page 129 stated that there are some strategies that taught to the students in traditional way for determining the solution of a systems of equation for instance eliminating a variable or isolating a variable and then substituting one equation into the other. However, many students try to solve the systems just by guessing and checking and it’s not useful enough to increase their development into a higher understanding.
The chapter explained that using context to engage students into the mathematical activities is important since students can use their knowledge of a context to think about relationships between quantities that lead to useful strategies in solving the systems of equation (Meyer in Fosnot and Jacob, 2010). From the given context, the students can exploring and modeling their ideas then teacher guide them to move from the model of to model for so that the students can use strategies to solve the systems equation. In the chapter, for instance the use of number line models support the students to simplify their thinking about the problem, it is also as an important tool in illustrating more generalize case.
Moreover, in the chapter also stated that the most important ideas arise through investigations of good problem (on page 153). It means that teacher choose a context and the problem which is posed in the classroom activities in a proper way not only just by randomly chosen.
