Such a function has a domain and range which belongs to real numbers.

Examples:

f( x ) = 2x or f( x ) = 3x^2

Rational functions:

Function which is the quotient of two polynomial functions. Let P( x ) and Q( x ) be the two functions, then,

[ P(x)/Q(x) ] = Rational function.

The above function is defined for all values except when Q( x ) is zero. So the domain of the rational function is,

Domain = R - { x : Q(x) = 0 }

This is what makes a rational function a bit more tricky.

Note: All rational functions are real valued functions.
