Explanation:

benzaldeHyde reacts with alkali

benzaldeHyde undergoes disproportionation alkai ( connizzaro reaction).one molecule of the aldehyde is reduced the benzyl alcohol and another molecule is simultaneously oxidised to benzonic acids.

ethanol reacts with alkali

If small piece of alkali( sodium) dropped into the ethanol, it reacts steadily to give off bubbles of hydrogen gas and leaves a colourless solution of sodium ethoxide CH3CH2ONa
