\rm x+\dfrac{1}{x} = -4

Squaring both the sides,

\rm\dashrightarrow \Bigg ( x+\dfrac{1}{x} \Bigg )^2 = (-4)^2

Since, (a+b)² = a²+b²+2ab, hence

\rm\dashrightarrow x^2+\dfrac{1}{x^2}+2\times x \times \dfrac{1}{x} =16

\rm \dashrightarrow x^2+\dfrac{1}{x^2}+2 =16

\rm\dashrightarrow x^2+\dfrac{1}{x^2} =16-2

\bf\dashrightarrow x^2+\dfrac{1}{x^2} =14

Hence, x² + 1/x² = 14
