Answer:- any process which involves, i) the addition of oxygen or any electronegative radical; ii) the removal of hydrogen or any other electropositive radical, is termed oxidation.

For ex- C+O2 ----> CO2 (addition of oxygen)

2FeCl2 + Cl2 ------> 2FeCl3 (addition of electronegative radical)

H2S + Br2 --------> 2HBr + S (removal of hydrogen)

2KI +H2O2 ------> 2KOH + I2 (removal of eletropositive radical)

A process which involves i) the addition of hydrogen or any other electropositive radical or ii) the removal of oxygen or any other electronegative radical is termed reduction.

For ex- H2S + Cl2 ------> 2HCl + S (addition of hydrogen)

2HgCl2 + SnCl2 --------> Hg2Cl2 + SnCl4 ( addition of an electropositive radical)

CuO + H2 -----> Cu + H2O (removal of oxygen)

2FeCl3 + H2 -----> 2FeCl2 + 2HCl

Hope its helps you mate.........
