oxidation state : It refers to number of positive or negative valance of a compound exist in ground state or excited state.

eg: FeSO4

The oxidation state generally means the valancy.

metal has postive oxidation state and non metal has negative oxidation state

oxidation number: It refers to the number of valance.

eg: +3, +4, -1
