let the distance be x
now time taken from a to b = x /40
time taken from b to a = x / 50
thus average speed = 2x ÷ ( x/40 + x /50)
= 2x ÷ 9x / 200
= 400/9
= 44.4
now time taken from a to b = x /40

thus average speed = 2x ÷ ( x/40 + x /50)
= 2x ÷ 9x / 200
