There are few lakhs of taans in Indian classical music.
A standout feature of Indian classical music is that it is almost entirely extemporaneous.
When the notes and the patterns of the notes which define a Raga are known to the performer, it becomes quite unnecessary to memorize taans or alaaps. That being said, certain duets or even solo performances might need the performers to memorize a pattern so that a climax sounds perfect on stage or for the ending to sound thrilling. On such occasions all the performers might rehearse the taan or the tihai, which requires minimal effort. Practice is usually the answer to any kind of mastery. But I will say this. Practice does not make you perfect…perfect practice makes you perfect!
