Answer:

Vishwamitra, earlier known as Kaushika, was a king who rejected Kshatriya duties and with his intense penance, became a Brahmarishi. The cause of this event was Vashishta.

Back when Vishwamitra was Kaushika, he visited the ashrama of Vashishta once with his entire army. Vashishta catered for the entire army with the aid of Kamadhenu, the wish fulfilling cow. Kaushika wished to take the cow for the welfare of his kingdom and asked Vashishta for Kamadhenu.

Vishwamtira wanted cow of Vashishta and tried force. The cow had superpowers and was Kamdenu. Vishwamtira realized that as a king he was unable to beat him so did penance and attained divine weapons and attacked Vashishta but he nullified his weapons with his cosmic power or yogic powers. He used his staff or Dand as a symbol to channelize his energy. However some people mistake it as a weapon and name it Brahmadand but that is wrong. Just like source of power of Thor is his own strength not the hammer thus the power was in Vashishta penance not in some stick. Vishwamitra again did penance and later became Brahmarishi. As per Shiv Puran son of Shiva Kartikeya was lying on shores of Ganga when Ganga threw him away unable to bear his power. Kartikeya called Vishwamitra to do his birth ceremony and said that he will attain status of Brahmrishi. Vishwamitra followed that and then he got that status and even Vashistha accepted that and animosity ended.

This is the story between Vashishta and Vishwamitra.

Hope it's help you
