basically valency is just an imaginary digits to give a basic outlook of electron affinity to a cell .but basically smth exists in originality is the oxidation state.
their are difrnt ways to find an oxidation no. but easiest one to find an nearly aproximate value is this

like if u want to find oxidation no. of H in H2O
u must always know the oxidation no. of atleast one element in the compound
so here O= -2
let the oxidation no. of H be x

so putting the eqn equal to 0

H2O

2×x + (-2) = 0
2x = 2
x=1
so one is the oxidation no. of hydrogen in water

Explanation:

The oxidation number of a free element is always 0.

The oxidation number of a monatomic ion equals the charge of the ion.

The oxidation number of H is +1, but it is -1 in when combined with less electronegative elements.

The oxidation number of O in compounds is usually -2, but it is -1 in peroxides.
