Calcium reacts slowly with water. This is in contrast with magnesium, immediately above calcium in the periodic table, which is virtually unreactive with cold water. The reaction forms calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 and hydrogen gas (H2).
IT'S OBSERVATION
Calcium floats on water because when it reacts with water it forms calcium hydroxide and realeases hydrogen gas .Now this hydrogen gas released during the reaction gets attached to the surface of the metal means to the surface of calcium therefore it appears to float on water.
