Can anyone tell me the meaning of,"(The narrator emphasis that the old man ceases to talk specifically to him ,for the old man is tired. He instead resorts to talking to himself, still trying to understand his situation of being displayed by war in lights of the fact he was"only taking care of animals")"

Hello dear❤❤... I guess this is from ➡'old man at the bridge' by Earnest Hemingway
Both the narrator and the old man had a good conversation between them and When the narrator (soldier) tried his best to lift up the man to save his life throughout the story, at last the old man walking several kilometers from San Carlos had been very tired and could not pull up his body to move ahead.
And at last he cried out--"I was taking care of my animals, I was only taking care of my animals " Which he didn't tell to the narrator this time but to the world that he was an ordinary man who had no knowledge about politics was going to give up his life due to it.
