MINNEAPOLIS — Police say accident that claimed the life of one child and seriously injured his brother Thursday happened when the two boys plunged off a third story apartment roof  in south Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder updated reporters on the investigation. He added that the victims were ages 3 and 1 1/2 years old, but could not say which one of the siblings perished.

1 child killed, another hurt in apartment fall

The children somehow got over a cement barrier on the third floor roof and plummeted to a patio below, authorities said.

At about 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, squads were called to the building on the 2800 block of Pleasant Avenue South on a report of two children who fell from an apartment building.

Workers saw the children fall and provided aid, according to police. Officers arrived and provided aid until paramedics arrived.

"These people witnessed something that was tragic and horrific and instead of freezing up they acted and they acted to try and save these children," Elder said.

Authorities say the children were under adult supervision and child protection services will be speaking with that person.

Police say two children were brought to HCMC by ambulance. One has died, and one has been upgraded to serious condition Thursday night. Police say the injuries are now believed to be non-life threatening. They say both children appear to be under 4 years old.

Investigators have spoken with family and are reviewing the scene. Public Information Officer John Elder says the investigation remains active.

"Our hearts go out to those that are affected by this tragedy and remind people to please ensure as we enter the warmer seasons that you keep your windows, sliding glass doors, and other areas secure so that young children and those that may be vulnerable can remain safe," Elder said.

Elder said the children were being watched by what was believed to be a responsible adult. Police say the children fell from a window or "opening," and they're trying to determine exactly what happened.

They don't know which floor the children fell from, but police say there are five floors.

Police do not know yet whether the children are related.

Basim Sabri, the owner of the 98-unit building, said the complex has at least 300 kids living there.
