Answer:
Explanation:
Compounds can be separated into their constituent elements, but elements cannot be further subdivided. Thus, atoms are the building blocks of matter on the atomic scale, elements are the building blocks of matter on the macroscopic level.

Answer:
Yes, the division of individual atoms is called nuclear fission, and it can happen naturally as well as artificially.
The most famous example of fission is the atomic bomb. While many modern bombs fuse hydrogen (merging instead of splitting atoms), the first atomic bombs, including the ones dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki, were purely fission devices, which split Uranium & Plutonium atoms. Modern fusion bombs fuse hydrogen atoms, instead of splitting heavier atoms. However, they still use a fission “primary” to ignite the fusion stage, since it requires an extremely high temperature to start.
Fission is also used to generate power at nuclear power plants. Fusion is not yet available here, because we cannot control fusion reactions (yet).
Fission has occurred naturally on Earth in the past. Scientists have found evidence of regions close to the surface in Gabon, Africa where Uranium-235 underwent spontaneous fission 2–3 billion years ago, in a natural reactor mediated by groundwater.[1] This is exactly the same reaction used in modern power plants, and it happened completely naturally! However, since the percentage of naturally occurring U-235 has decreased since then (from ~3% to ~0.7%), this reaction is no longer possible in nature.
Many radioactive materials (without an external power source) will undergo nuclear fission as a part of their natural decay process. Portions of the atom’s nucleus will break off, emitting radiation as it “falls” to a more stable state. One example is the decay of Potassium-40, which can emit electrons or gamma rays, depending on its decay process. These electrons come from the nucleus as a result of converting a neutron into a proton. Potassium-40 occurs naturally in the human body, and is one of the reasons why humans are very mildly radioactive
