They are a Tibetan Buddhist monk and they are not required to wear my robes all the time. If I are at a monastery or Buddhist center, or participating in a Buddhist activity, they wear my robes. When one is wearing robes, one is a living representation of the Buddha and his teachings and it is important to behave in a way that is appropriate to that message. they don’t drop my Buddhist practice when not in robes, but when they am out to dinner with friends or alone in my home, there is no need to wear robes. they remember my teacher when they were ordained saying to me, “Now, Pandi, please don’t wear your robes to the movies or if you go out dancing!” Wearing robes reminds one of one’s vows, but is primarily worn to send a message to others regarding your life choices and, when at a Buddhist center, they make it easier for students to understand your role and how you should be treated. It is up to me to respect my vows regardless of what they wear.
