Okay, I think this question is right in my alley. I’m going to briefly write about how I ended up in data science from civil engineering. Hope this can get you some ideas or motivation to pursue a career in data science.

I did my undergrad in civil engineering from a good ranked university in India. I never struggled through any of my courses during my years in engineering, and graduated with an above average GPA. But, I always felt that civil was not my calling. I was lost as to what to pursue as a career. A series of internships in good civil engineering companies eventually made me realize that I cannot continue down this path.

The easiest way out for most people in a similar situation was to pursue an MBA and switch careers. However, very few realize that getting an MBA without any real work experience is not going to be that beneficial. Then came the time for placements. I saw people in Computer Science and IT with these amazing offers from top companies, whereas civil engineers were grossly underpaid for their talents with hardly any benefits. Half heartedly, I decided to give my GRE and pursue a Masters in Civil Engineering with the hopes that job prospects in other countries will be better. I didn’t quite give it all for my GRE and ended up with an average score. Most of my peers had near perfect scores, and bagged admits from top tier universities.
