Can coal and diamond be broken down into simpler substances?

We cannot break coal and diamond because:-

They are the purest form of carbon available.We cannot get more simpler substances than an element.Since carbon is an element,we cannot break it down.

However if we try to dissolve it in any solution ,carbon dioxide will be formed.

Thus more complex substances can be obtained. But we cannot break them into simpler matter.
