Cnidarians are typically dimorphic, existing as either a sessile polyp or as a motile medusa, which in many ways is like a polyp turned upside down. Many species alternate between the two forms, with the medusa serving as the sexual stage. The sessile polyp buds off tiny medusae from its upper surface.
