can convection take place in solids? why?

No.. convection cannot take place in solids...

Solids have packed particles which means they cannot move freely....it means that they transfer heat by the vibration of particles which is called conduction....

Air particles and water particles are loose..i.e they are free and not packed... So, the heat in fluids (liquid and gas) is transferred by convection...
