yes distance can be equal to displacement only if the body moves in a straight line path.

Yes, displacement can be equal to distance.

Distance and displacement :

  • "Displacement is the shortest distance or straight-line path between the initial position and final position of an object."
  • "Whereas, distance is the total length of the actual path (from the initial position to the final position) covered by an object."

Now, when the object itself travels through a straight-line path, the total covered distance becomes equal to the displacement of that object. In this case, only, the displacement becomes equal to the total covered distance. (apart from the case when the object is traveling through a straight-line path, the displacement and total covered distance, always have some difference between them)
