Can fractional distillation always be used as a substitute for simple distillation?

✍️ The choice of whether to use simple or fractional distillation, then, depends usually on the difference in boiling temperatures between the two liquids. If there is a large difference in the boiling points (>70°C)between the two liquids then simple distillation is probably the best option.

✍️ Fractional distillation leads to a better separation than simple distillation because the glass beads in the fractionating column provide "theoretical plates" on which the vapors can condense and then re-evaporate, and re-condense, essentially distilling the compound many times over.
