Answer:
All life on Earth is competing to survive. Predators kill to survive. Humans are the most successful land predator on the face of the planet. We’re literally at the top of the food chain because of this. Our base functions are to hunt, consume (Cows, strawberries, grubs, and anything else we can hunt or gather, we’re omnivorous and not picky when truly hungry), and make little humans.
At the same time, these successful hunting and gathering skills provided our distant ancestors a considerable amount of free time. They were bright and curious, their base instincts and gut feelings became our emotions. They formed social groups and developed empathy toward their fellows and other life (to a lesser degree) on this planet.
Now here we are 100,000+ years later. We still have all the same basic instincts to survive while at the same time having some level of empathy for others. Each one of us as individuals is responsible for balancing our instinct for survival against our empathy towards humans and the rest of life on this planet. Depending on how you balance survival vs. empathy dictates what you will be willing to do to survive and when. It’s a very broad spectrum.
The best example of this is from 1972 when Flight 571 crashed in the Andes. The survivors were trapped for 72 days with no warmth or food. Cold and starving, survival forced the crash victims to either resort to cannibalism or die. None of these other wise reasonable people WANTED to do this, but it had become a matter of survival.
Never under estimate what a starving human will do to survive once empathy is defeated by hunger.
