Mr Thomas Marvel of the novel' The invisible man' is a tramp and out cast. He is very clumsy and dirty and was not accepted in the usual society. So he was always wandering around the country. His helpless state and stupid frame of mind made him an ideal instrument in the hands of Griffin, the invisible man. He could be manipulated into doing anything at first. His greed for money made him obey Griffin without any questions. But the very first operation made him realize the dangers of his job. Then he wanted to quit but was unable to do so immediately.

But at last he was smart enough to outsmart the invisible man and was able to escape with a lot of money and Griffin's invaluable books. Marvel was able to utilize the money he had escaped with to start an inn. Toward the end of the story we see him as a prospering innkeeper. He was successfully hoodwinked the locals and pretended to know nothing about the books. At the same time he feels an unaccountable power in possessing the books even if he could not decipher a words of it. Marvel is the best example of a man on whom 'greatness was thrust up on' by fate.
