Kunjan Nambiar is the most popular poet of Kerela. Every educated Keralite must have read at least one poem of his.
An interesting tale is told about his birth. A very poor Namboodri Brahmin was going around collecting money from friends to marry off his daughters. He came to a village temple in Kerela. He went to the temple tank to have his bath. He left his purse containing the money he had collected, on the steps of the tank. After his bathe , when he came to the steps he found his purse missing. He looked everywhere for his purse but couldn't find it. He was very sad. The next year he again came to the same place to collect money. The temple priest took him to his house to serve him food. He told the priest about the loss of his purse. The priest's wife brought out a purse. "Is this your grace's purse?", she asked. The Namboodri looked at it eagerly and said, "Yes, how did you get it?". "Your grace", she said, "You left it on the steps of the tank when you bathed. A cow came and dropped its dung over it. So you could not find it. I happened to see it later. I have kept it for you." The Namboodri opened the purse and counted the money. Not a single coin was missing. "You must take half of this.", he said to the lady, "You have kept it with great care." "No, thank you", she replied. The Namboodri was so pleased that he gave her a blessing, "Next year, you will have a baby. He will grow up to be a great man", he said. The following year, the great poet Kunjan Nambiar was born to that lady.
