first find the LCM of those 2 then add them.

LCM of 4 and 9 is 36 and LCM of 5 and 3 is 15....

a)5/ 4 + (-11/9) = 5/4 - 11/9

= (45 - 44)/ 36

= 1/36

b) -4/5 + (-7/3) = -4/5 - 7/3

= (-12 -35)/15

= -47 /15
