1. How can one find an experienced boatman?
T he experienced sailors or boatmen love to get the rowing and work done from the younger, inexperienced sailors. They stretch themselves out upon the cushions at the bottom of the boat, and encourage the rowers by telling them anecdotes about the marvelous feats he performed last season.
2. How do we know that Jim enjoyed boating?
Jim enjoyed boating considerably when he was young. He had devoted some three months to rafting, and determined to go in for rowing proper, and joined one of the Lea boating clubs.
3. Why did Jim not like his friends chaffing the punter?
Jim did not like his friends chaffing at him for two reasons. Firstly it was unethical and discourteous to make fun of a stranger. Secondly, he realized the punter was wearing clothes similar to his; he was ashamed to realize that his friends were chaffing the stranger punter mistaking him to be Jim himself.
4. How was the misunderstanding cleared?
The misunderstanding was cleared when the punter boy turned his face towards them to protest against their chaffing. Then they realized the boy whom they had mistaken to be Jim was someone else. They apologized to him.
5. What according to Jim was the possible reason that the boat did not get upside down?
According to Jim the boat did not get upside down because of its natural obstinacy. The boat might possibly have come to the conclusion, judging from a cursory view of their behaviour, that they had come out for a morning suicide, and had thereupon determined to disappoint them.
