Risk and Exposure to Chemicals

There are hazards in the laboratory and chemicalsfigure prominently among them. In addition to the physical properties ofreactive chemicals, traditionally the focus of life safety in the laboratory, theirtoxicity is of recent and growing concern. Although the toxic properties ofcertain chemicals has been known for thousands of years, the significance ofrisks associated with toxic chemicals in the laboratory on the health oflaboratory workers is only lately coming to light. While exposures to highlytoxic or acutely toxic substances are, given their short-term effects, easy toidentify, the long-term effect of exposure to certain chemicals is much moredifficult to predict. However, the list of compounds for which there is sufficientevidence for carcinogenicity is growing (see appendix at the end of thissection). Many of these chemicals are commonly found in laboratories. TheOSHA Laboratory Standard cites five studies on the long-term effects ofexposure to toxic substances in the laboratory. While the results are notconclusive, they suggest an increased incidence of pancreatic and possibly braintumors and lymphohaematopoietic mali
