Usually the length of a rectangular shape is bigger than the width.

Suppose we are in front of a room. Then the width is the span from the left to the right.  The length is the depth of the room in the forward direction.

Width is the dimension sideways. Length is usually along the sight of our eyes.

Width can be smaller than the length or  bigger than the length.
