So if you happen to be a reporter and a film comes to town, then it may even be encouraged by your station for the publicity opportunity for you to do both. But when I was making the transition trying to do both I was told it’s one or the other by my boss. I couldn’t keep taking time off, often last minute, to do an acting gig which at first were pretty much limited to background and independent films. So I cut the cord and never looked back.

Answer:

I did. I spent my first career as a TV news reporter for eight different stations/states before deciding to try my hand at acting. The first thing you’ll notice is the lack of a regular, consistent paycheck. But in terms of doing both at the same time, unless you’re lucky enough to work in a market like New York or Chicago or LA, where films are made on a regular basis,(think “The Fugitive”) all the reporters in the speaking roles were real ones from Chicago.
