This is because plants are the basic producers at the least trophic level who make their food from sunlight from which the animals at higher trophic levels receive energy and as the organisms at higher levels die and decay they are decomposed by the decomposers which provide nutrients to plants.And the cycle continues.Thus no plant or animal can survive independently.
