Can rivers run backward if yes then what is its effect

Rivers do not run backward in normal cases. It may happen when there are massive earthquakes. As far as I know,It has happened once in recorded history when the missisippi river ran backwards due to a large eathquake, producing disastrous consequences and killing thousands of people. It was one of the worst floods in US. The river later changed its course.
