Yes, salt is used as a metaphor for salt satyagraha.
The British had passed a law and tax on salt, a staple of Indian's diet, which gave British merchants a monopoly on salt and the Parliament placed a high tax on the product.

(1) it brought the British to the table to talk about self-rule,

(2) strengthen Indian resistance to the Raj (British rule), and

(3) displayed to the world the plight of the Indians and the benefit of nonviolent civil disobedience.

Salt satyagraha refers to the protest against the Salt laws introduced by the British .

The British introduced the Salt laws according to which it was a crime to take salt without license .

Thus in the Civil Disobedience Movement , Gandhiji violated the Laws by picking up some salt .

It affected all the sections of the society and therefore Gandhiji wanted to violate the Salt Laws .

Satyagraha refers to fasting and a way to protest against the evil using non violence .
