It takes less heat to separate the molecules of covalent compounds. So, thesecompounds have much lower melting and boiling points than ionic compounds do. Most covalent compounds that dissolve in water form solutions that have uncharged molecules. For example, sugar is a covalent compound that dissolves in water.
