Clauses are a gr of words which may or may not form a complete meaning. They make up a sent. Those clauses who have their own meaning are main clauses. Those clauses who do not have a independent meaning of their own and are dependent on main clauses are called subordinate clauses.

For eg- I dashed the school gate when I heard the school bell ring.

Here “ I dashed the school gate” has its own meaning. Therefore it is main clause.
“When I heard the school bell ring “ this part doesn’t give u a clear idea unless u read the main clause. Therefore it is subordinate clause.
