Two or more resistors could have two possible configurations as you explained series/parallel. There are different myths, theories and concepts which tell how to identify two or more resistors in series or parallel, but here I am going to explain the entire concept in very simple and easy to grab manner.

Two or more resistors are in series if head of one resistor joins the tail of another one (having no other connection in between them).

Two or more resistors are in parallel if their heads meet at a common junction and their tails meet at another junction.

Hope you got the entire idea from these two points.
