let the speed of boat in water be x km/hr and speed of stream be y km/hr.
of course speed of boat will be more than that of stream, otherwise how could it move?!
now, upstream speed = (x-y)km/hr
downstream speed = (x+y) km/hr.
remember that while calculating upstream speed, we subtract speed of stream from that of boat and in downstream, we add the speeds.
That's it...

I hope this helps you
