Can someone give examples of single and double displacement?
Answers
A double displacement reaction means two elements or groups are swapped. Many times, this involves an insoluble solid being removed from a reaction solution. The common difference is that in single displacement rxn only one metal displaces the other whereas in double displacement rxn exchange of two metals takes place.
An example of a single replacement reaction occurs when potassium (K) reacts with water (H2O). A colorless solid compound named potassium hydroxide (KOH) forms, and hydrogen gas (H2) is set free.
The silver traded its nitrite ion for the sodium's chloride ion. Another example is the reaction between sodium sulfide and hydrochloric acid to form sodium chloride and hydrogen sulfide: Na2S + HCl → NaCl + H2S.
